Your figures in Chalkline

In your browser

While you are using Chalkline on this website, the figures you enter are kept with your account on our server, backed up with it, and are the same on any computer you sign in from. They are not shown to anyone else, not sold, not shared, and not used for anything except showing them back to you.

On your own computer

The desktop version, which you can install once you subscribe, keeps your figures on that computer only. They are not sent to us or to anybody else. The only thing it sends is a check, every few hours, asking whether your subscription is still running — that carries an anonymous number that identifies the subscription, set up for you when you sign in, and nothing else. There is nothing for you to keep. If it cannot reach us it keeps working.

Moving from one to the other

When you first sign in to the desktop version with your email and password, it brings the figures you entered in the browser down onto that computer. From then on that computer's copy is its own. Ask and your figures will be removed from the server afterwards.

Deleting the desktop copy

The desktop copy is on your computer and is yours to delete. There is a remove option inside it that saves a copy to your desktop first.

Who looks after your data

Chalkline is run by JTS, a small software business based in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA. For anything about your data, write to chalkline@jtsapps.com. A person reads every message.

What is kept, and why

• Your account: your email address, your business name if you gave one, and your password, stored only as a one-way scrambled form that cannot be turned back into the password.
• Whether you have paid: your plan, its dates, and the reference Stripe gives the payment. Your card number goes to Stripe, never to JTS.
• What you put into Chalkline, so it is there next time you sign in. The section below says what that is for this tool.
• Messages you send us, so we can answer them.

What is never done with it

It is never sold, never used for advertising, never shown to another customer, and never used to compare you with anyone.

Who helps us run it

• Fly.io runs the servers, in Dallas, Texas, USA, where your data is stored.
• Stripe takes card payments.
• Google Workspace carries the email we send you and the email you send us.
• Google Fonts supplies the typeface on our public pages, so Google sees your internet address when it sends it.
• Cloudflare answers the lookup that turns our web address into a server address. Your visits do not pass through it.

Cookies and visit counts

• One cookie keeps you signed in, and a short-lived one is used while you move between JTS tools. There are no advertising or tracking cookies.
• We count how many times each public page is opened, as plain numbers per page per day. No cookie is set and no internet address is kept for this.

How long it is kept, and your choices

• Your data is kept while you have an account, so it is all there if you stop paying and come back.
• Ask, and we send you a copy, correct it, or delete your account and everything in it. A deletion is done within 30 days; copies in our backups are overwritten in the normal backup cycle after that. Payment records the law makes us keep are kept for as long as it says.
• Where the law in your country gives you more rights over your data, we honor them.
• Chalkline is made for businesses and adults, not for children.
